Project Newborn was founded in 1974 by Schatzi Kassal and six friends; thereafter known as the “7 Babes.” For the ensuing 50 years the “Babes” and a huge membership of devoted volunteers raised more than 18 million dollars. Their efforts have resulted in the world class Project: New Born Neonatal Intensive Care Unit housed at the University of Miami Health System.
Starting with a mere seven beds, coupled with the skill, research efforts and commitment put forth by a brilliant team of neonatologists, nurses, and researchers, Project: New Born helped to transform the tiny NICU into one of the largest and most proficient of it’s kind in the United States. The unit treats premature babies from all over the world and serves as a research hospitals through it’s affiliation with the University of Miami.
Since it's inception, Project: New Born has helped countless premature babies grow into fully developed, healthy and strong children. Project: New Born has become one of the most significant foundations in its arena, boasting a wide network of beneficiaries and earning the reputation of a fundraising force to be reckoned with.
In 1973, the mortality rate for a premature baby was 96%. Today, the survival has reversed. Now 96% of premature babies grow up to be healthy and happy!
Funds raised for Project: New Born go toward research, equipment, salaries of key personnel and advocacy programs for premature and high-risk babies.
